Summer sun is great. Summer air conditioning bills? Not so much. Reduce your cooling costs with a few quick tricks that can improve the efficiency of your HVAC system.
Make sure ceiling fans are set to rotate counterclockwise to push cool air down. On most units, this is as easy as turning off the power and flipping the switch on the unit.
Close blinds and curtains during the day to reduce heat coming into your home through the windows. While you’re at it, check to make sure all windows are closed and locked to keep hot air from seeping in.
Avoid using the oven or dryer, which circulate warm air throughout your home and make your AC work harder, on really hot days.
Inspect and vacuum vents to remove dust, pet hair, and other debris. Move drapes, rugs, furniture, and other items in front of vents that block air flow. Installing Frost King Heat/Air Deflectors on vents can direct the air conditioning towards the ceiling for improved cooling. (In the winter, just point the deflectors down for improved heating.)
