How (and Why) to Install Window Film this Winter

Window Kits

With winter right around the corner, you’re probably looking for ways to make your home warm and cozy without breaking the bank on your energy bills.

If you’ve got older windows that are letting in chilly outside air, adding a Frost King Window Kit is an easy and cost-effective way to keep the heat in and the cold out. Read on to learn why adding window kits is the smart choice to make this winter—plus, find step-by-step tips on how to install them.

Why Install Window Kits?

Your old, leaky windows could be responsible for 25-30% of your home's heating and cooling bill. Replacing old windows could make your home much more energy efficient, but when new windows aren’t in the budget, installing window kits is the next best thing. Here are four benefits to window kits:

They Reduce Heat Loss Old windows with failed seals or single-pane glass can let cold air seep in and warm air escape. A window kit creates an extra layer of insulation that traps heat inside so your home feels warmer—and because it shrinks crystal clear, you still get great views of the outdoors.

They Lower Energy Bills When leaky windows let heat escape, your heating system must work overtime to keep your home at a comfortable temperature—and that leads to higher energy bills. Our Window Kits act as a thermal barrier, helping to reduce the strain on your heating system. Over time, they can save up to $500 on your home energy costs, making them an investment that’s well worth it.

They Prevent Drafts Drafts around windows can make rooms feel chilly and uncomfortable, even when your thermostat is set to a warm temperature. Window kits seal small gaps between the window glass and the frame, reducing the amount of cold air that sneaks into your home and gives you a chill.

They’re Cost-Effective and Easy to Install Compared to replacing windows or adding storm windows, installing one of our window kits costs just a few dollars per window, making it an affordable option. Plus, it’s a simple DIY project that you can knock out in an afternoon.

How to Install Window Film

Ready to make your home more energy-efficient this winter? Here’s a step-by-step guide to installing a Frost King Window Kit:

What You’ll Need:

 Frost King Window Kit
• Measuring tape
• Scissors or utility knife
• Spray bottle with soapy water
• Soft cloth or microfiber towel
• Hairdryer

Step 1: Clean the Window Trim

Before applying the film, spray the surface around the window with soapy water and use a soft cloth to wipe away dust, dirt, or grime that might keep the film from adhering properly.

Step 2: Apply the Tape

Cut a piece of tape to size for each side of the window. Remove the adhesive backing from one side of the tape and firmly press it into place, repeating on all four sides of the window. Note that some Window Kits, like our EZ Roll Window Insulation Kit, have a pre-taped edge that’s used at the top of the window; If you’re using this kit, only place tape along the sides and bottom of the window.

Step 3: Apply the Film

Remove the adhesive backing from the strip of tape at the top of the window and carefully press the film into place, leaving a 1” overhang.  Remove the backing from the strip of tape at the bottom of the window, then pull the film slightly taut and press against the tape. Repeat with both sides, pulling and stretching the film to smooth out any wrinkles.

Step 4: Set the Film

Use a hairdryer set at the highest setting to gently heat the film and remove any wrinkles; be sure to hold the hairdryer 4 to 6 inches away from the film, moving it in a circular motion until the film is taut and crystal clear.

Step 5: Trim the Excess Film

Use scissors or a utility knife to trim any excess film.
