Update Your Entry

Weatherstripping

Looking for a quick way to freshen up your home this fall? Painting your front door a new color is a great autumn do-it-yourself project that’s low in effort but big in impact.

  • Hue are you? Pick a new color that complements your siding. Bright colors like yellow, turquoise, lime, and orange are on-trend for front doors, but if traditional is more your style, you can never go wrong with an elegant black, red, or indigo. Whatever you choose, be sure to purchase an exterior-grade paint that can withstand the elements.

  • Prep surfaces. Remove hardware or tape it off to avoid splattering paint on door knobs, locks, and hinges. Lightly sand the surface of the door with low grit sandpaper so fresh paint will adhere well, then thoroughly wipe away any dust or grime.

  • Mind the gaps. Carefully examine the areas around the entryway for gaps or cracks in the weatherstripping. Seal any gaps with an easy-to-install product like Frost King Vinyl Foam Weatherseal, which will seal out drafts so your home is more comfortable this winter.

  • Replace hardware. While the door is drying, give doors and locks a quick polish before reattaching them.

  • Complete your wow-worthy update with a new door mat and pots of cheery chrysanthemums or asters.
